Everyone should have the ability to enjoy clean, fresh air in the City of Edmonton. It is an offense to create or allow odours, emissions, smoke, vapour, dust or other airborne matter that originates from property you own or occupy to bother surrounding residents or businesses.

Please ensure you are respectful of your neighbors before engaging in any activity that could create such odours, emissions, smoke, vapour, dust or other airborne matter otherwise it could result in a complaint.

Factors To Consider When Making A Complaint

Whether an odour is considered bothersome varies from person to person, however there are some factors that are taken into consideration when a complaint is being reviewed by a bylaw officer:

  • The type, frequency, intensity or duration of the odour, emission, smoke, vapour, dust or other airborne matter

  • The time of day and day of the week

  • The proximity to neighbouring properties

  • The nature and use of the surrounding area

  • The effects of the odour, emission, smoke, vapour, dust or other airborne matter

Reporting Your Concerns

If you have a concern about an odour, emission, smoke, vapour, dust or other airborne matter:

  • Discuss the concern directly with the property owner
  • If the matter does not resolve itself, Call 311 or make a complaint online
  • Once you have made a complaint through 311, retain your file number and submit a witness statement using the Excessive Odour & Emission Witness Statement
