Alberta became a province on September 1, 1905. In recognition of this anniversary and in celebration of our province’s unique spirit, culture and heritage, the Government of Alberta has designated September 1 as Alberta Day.

Celebrate Alberta Day in Sir Winston Churchill Square!

Join the Alberta Day celebration in Sir Winston Churchill Square and the City Hall Plaza. This free family-friendly event will offer activities and entertainment for people of all ages. The afternoon will include performances by the Wadjo Drummers, and singer-songwriters Zach Willier and Billie Zizi. Take part in a Bubble Bike Dance Party, a mobile dance party featuring a number of costumed characters, music, the Mas Cariwest dancers – and of course, loads of bubbles!

The Edmonton Arts Council will be on hand with games and activities including table tennis, large format chess and checkers, snakes and ladders and giant Lego.

Free ice cream will be served while supplies last. Food trucks will be on-site for those wishing to purchase other tasty treats. Bring your sunscreen and beach towel and enjoy an end-of-summer splash in the City Hall fountain.

Alberta Day Celebrations at the Alberta Legislature Grounds

Head to the Alberta Legislature grounds September 1 to 3 to celebrate everything that makes Alberta special. Enjoy performances by local artists, a made-in-Alberta marketplace, beer gardens and more! Finish the day on September 3 with a concert by Alberta-born country artist, Brett Kissel at 8:30pm, followed by a spectacular fireworks show at 9:30pm.

Getting There

Sir Winston Churchill Square, the City Hall Plaza, and the Alberta Legislature grounds are easily accessible by bus and LRT. Plan your trip by visiting edmonton.ca/transit, calling 311, or by using real-time tools like Transit app or Google Maps.

Parking

A number of parking restrictions will be in effect during the event at the Alberta Legislature grounds. Please obey all signage, as tag and tow will be in effect.

Road Closures

A number of road closures will be in effect in the vicinity of the Alberta Legislature grounds on September 2 from 4-9pm, and on September 3, from 10am-1pm:

96 Avenue, west of 106 Street
107 Street, south of the Government Centre transit centre
Fortway Drive at the Royal Glenora Parking Lot
Legislature Building Road at97 Avenue
106 Street at River Valley Road

An additional road closure to support the fireworks will be in effect on September 3, from 9-10:30pm:

River Valley Road, from 105 Street to the Victoria Park parking lot. Access to the Royal Glenora will be maintained from the west, with no entrance or exit available from 105 Street

Pedestrian access

To ensure public safety, the pedestrian routes along the fireworks safety perimeter will be closed from 9 to 10:30pm on Saturday, September 3:

River Valley Road, from 105 Street to the Menzies LRT Bridge

Alternate pedestrian routes during this time:

From the west: detour via the Menzies LRT Bridge or Fortway Drive
From the east: detour via Walterdale Bridge or 105 Street
