Aquatic leadership programs can lead to recreation career opportunities as a lifeguard or swimming instructor. The City of Edmonton offers a progression of certification courses that provides you with the required qualifications to meet your goals.
Safety and Aquatic Certification Courses and Recertifications
Complete the following programs:

Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross/Standard First Aid/CPR-C/AED

Instructor Strokes & Skills Evaluation
-
Lifesaving Society Swim for Life and Lifesaving Instructor Course
City of Edmonton aquatic instructors must hold a current copy of the above certifications.
Pre-requisite: Must be 15 years or older and have completed Grade 10.
Become a Lifeguard
Complete the following programs:

Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross/Standard First Aid/CPR-C/AED

Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard (NL)
City of Edmonton lifeguards must hold a current copy of the above certifications.
Pre-requisite: Must be 18+ years old and have completed Grade 12.
Become an Aquafit Instructor
Complete the following programs:

Fitness Theory course
-
Standard First Aid/CPR-C/AED award
-
One of the following specialty courses: Aquatic Exercise Leader, Resistance Training Leader, Group Exercise Leader, Fitness for the Older Adult
AFLCA Fitness Leaders must complete 2 exams, a practical observation component, a 7-hour practicum, recertify their CPR-C award yearly, and pay a certification fee.
Pre-requisite: Must be 16+ years old.
