Waste Warrior Academy is an interactive eLearning program that is closely linked to the grade 4 science curriculum (Topic A: Waste and Our World), and includes questions, activities, videos, and Waste Warrior Mission Challenges!

The program consists of five units. Each unit consists of modules (or lessons), for a total of 17 modules:

What curriculum connections can be found in Waste Warrior Academy?

The program covers the following Specific Learner Expectations in Topic A: Waste and Our World:

SLE 2: Identify and classify wastes that result from human activity
SLE 3: Describe alternative methods of disposal, and identify possible advantages and disadvantages of each
SLE 4: Distinguish between wastes that are readily biodegradable and those that are not
SLE 6: Identify methods of waste disposal currently used within the local community
SLE 7: Identify kinds of wastes that may be toxic to people and to the environment
SLE 8: Identify alternative materials and processes that may decrease the amount of waste produced
SLE 9: Identify ways in which materials can be reused or recycled, including examples of things that the student has done
SLE 10: Develop a flow chart for a consumer product that indicates the source materials, final product, its use and method of disposal
SLE 11: Identify actions that individuals and groups can take to minimize the production of wastes, to recycle or reuse wastes and to ensure the safe handling and disposal of wastes

What’s the best way to review the course material with my students?

There are several options for delivering the course to your students:

Go through each module together as a class. The program is web-based, so it can be presented the same way you would present any web page to your students (example: through a smartboard or by sharing your screen with an online class). You would control the interactive elements of the course (example: Moving forward or back through the course material, playing videos, opening links, and so forth). The teachers who piloted our program used this method most often, and found it was a great way to discuss the information in the course with their students.
Assign individual modules to students. You can provide the link(s) for each module to the students (example: through Google Classroom). Each student would then go through the module on their own.
Use the Waste Warrior Academy website. This website contains links to all the units and modules in the course. Students can then work their way through the course material at their own pace. This method also saves you time, as you won’t need to share individual links for each module.

We recommend that you go through Training Module 1.1 together as a class before starting the other units or modules. This way, everyone can see how the course works before they start on their own.

How can my students track their progress?

There are two different ways you or your students can track their progress as they progress through the course.

Assign individual modules through Google Classroom. Assign each module to the students by providing the specific module link. Ask them to submit it as complete when they have finished the module.
Download the Waste Warrior Academy tracking sheet, and print a copy for each student. This PDF will allow students to check off the modules they have completed. You will find a link for the tracking sheet on the Waste Warrior Academy website.
