Apply for a Waste Identification Number (WID#)

A Waste Identification Number (WID#) is a pre-approval for special waste.

The Edmonton Waste Management Centre accepts the following types of special-handling waste:

Soil >1 tonne
Residential Soil

‚ÄčNo WID# and/or Manifest Required

Black soil/organic soil or soil mixtures are not accepted.

If material is primarily clay or primarily gravel, test results confirming the material is not contaminated are required. The tests are Total Metals, Total Hydrocarbons (F1-F4), Total BTEX, pH, and flashpoint.

If material is deemed contaminated, it will not be accepted.

Prohibited Items
The following special-handling waste is no longer accepted at the EWMC:
  • Animal Carcasses and/or Ashes
  • Asbestos
  • Biohazards and Biomedical Waste
  • Canisters, Tanks or Vessels (Pressurized)
  • Cement Pipe with Asbestos
  • Contaminated Soil
  • Fiberglass Residuals
  • Frozen Liquids 
  • Liquid Waste
  • Loose Powder and Dust
  • Oily Rags
  • Sandblasting Media (Sand, Nutshells)
  • Seed Dust
  • Sewage Debris
  • Silica Sand
  • Spent Catalyst
  • Sump Waste
  • Vehicle Fluid
  • Wet Sanitary Solids
