District Planning is a multi-year project to build the City Plan’s 15-minute districts—small towns in our big city, where people can meet many of their daily needs locally.

Districts provide a greater sense of community. They will include more compact and mixed-use development making it easier to walk, bike and take transit.

No city is static, and as we plan to welcome more people to our city, districts will help us build complete communities where we can work, shop and enjoy nature. When we plan our city on a district level, it also helps us be more thoughtful and efficient with our infrastructure like roads, transit, and parks.

Finally, District Planning will also add to other projects implementing the City Plan’s (38MB) vision. Whether providing a link between the City Plan and the Zoning Bylaw or supporting the City Planning Framework simplifying our land use policies and plans, District Planning will contribute to the work of welcoming the next one million people to our city.
