Two public events were held at City Hall to share the highlights of the draft Breathe Strategy where a presentation was delivered at each event. Copies of the draft strategy were available for review and input and project team members were present to discuss the project and answer questions to the 177 people who attended.
Throughout the project, 47 engagement events were held to connect with communities on their ideas about our parks and open space system. Through these opportunities, 1200 people engaged in discussions about the city’s open space system and 2500 people were engaged through online surveys. Breathe’s engagement approach of “going where the people are,” led team members to 11 festivals throughout the summer months where valuable public input was received.
Check out the article "Breathe, Edmonton — city to release green space vision," written by Jeremy Simes where he interviewed Breathe's project manager Geoff Smith to discuss the release of the draft Strategy. In the article, Geoff explains that the plan is more than just a ‘parks plan,’ and how it is essentially a ‘land management tool’ that looks how Edmonton parks are being used and what improvements can be made as the city grows rapidly over the next few decades.
Check out the feature “Room to breathe...Edmonton does things differently,” where Landscapes magazine explores Breathe and what sets the project apart from traditional planning practices. Breathe: Edmonton’s Green Network Strategy provides the opportunity to revisit the role that open spaces play in ensuring ecological integrity and quality of life, and to reflect on how open space planning can make Edmonton even better.

Madeleine Cummings from the Edmonton Examiner stated in her article titled Toronto urban planning expert praises Edmonton's green strategy, "During a lunchtime presentation at City Hall on Thursday, Nina-Marie Lister congratulated city planners on “an unbelievable strategy” that resembles, in many ways, what the city of Toronto is trying to accomplish with a developing strategy to manage and care for its ravines."
The Let's Talk Park event was part of the City's Great Ideas. Great City. Speaker Series in collaboration with the City-Region Studies Centre with the Faculty of Extension at the University of Alberta.
