Civic Youth Fellowship (Council Internship)

In spring 2023, Council piloted an internship program, enabling 13 interns from racialized and underrepresented communities to work in the Mayor and Councillor offices for 8 weeks. 

Goal

• Encourage the youth to gain leadership experience
• Grow their professional network
• Learn new skills in the public sector
• Share their lived experience and new ideas with the city’s leadership

Since the completion of the program, 6 of the 13 interns have secured part-time or full-time employment, including 4 within Council Offices, Administration or another government policy office.

The City gathered feedback from the pilot partners, participants and City Council. That information will be used to strengthen the next iteration of the program.

Next Steps

Administration will be recommending a 2024 intake in order to continue to provide opportunities for diverse youth in municipal government.
