At Muttart Conservatory, we take a fun, interactive approach to learning within our living laboratory. Our hands-on school programs are sure to complement your curriculum objectives! Where else can you travel from the deepest, darkest jungle, to a desert oasis, to a shady forest retreat and still be home for lunch?

The bookings office is open 9am-4pm, Monday-Friday.
Extended hours: Wednesday (8:30am-6pm), Saturday (8am-3pm).

Year-Round School Programs

Colours and Textures (Preschool - Grade 1)

Grades: Preschool - Grade 1
Program Length: 1.5 hours (Preschool), 2 hours (K-Grade 1)
Fees: $170

Take a sensory adventure through our pyramids! Students’ senses will be tingling as they learn how a variety of spectacular plants use colours, shapes and textures to help them survive in extreme conditions. Hunt for the colours of the rainbow in the pyramids as you learn all about creating colour and its importance in the natural world. Students will flex their green thumbs by potting a colourful seedling to take home.

Smarty Plants (Grades 1-3)

Grades: 1 – 3
Program Length: 2 hours
Fees: $170

Explore the genius of the botanical world as we discover survival strategies that plants use to live in tropical jungles, temperate forests, and deserts around the world. Students will learn about plant parts by dressing a student (or teacher) up like a flower. They'll explore the pyramid from a bee’s point of view, and work together to determine the needs of plants. Their new knowledge will come in handy when they plant their own seedling to care for at home.

Gardener on the Go (Grade 4)

Grade: 4*
Program Length: 2 hours
Location & Fees: $180 at Your School**

Muttart Conservatory is on the move to a classroom near you! Have a guest interpreter inspire your students with hands-on activities related to plant growth and change. Students will learn about plant survival strategies, examine unusual plants and work together to determine the needs of plants. Their new knowledge will come in handy as they care for their own seedling that they plant and take home.

** An additional interpreter fee of $23/hour or part thereof will be added to the cost of the program if the length of time between the first and second scheduled program in the same day exceeds one hour.

Gardener on the Go Information Package

Budding Botanists (Grades 4-6)

Grades: 4-6
Program Length: 2 hours
Fees: $170

What have plants ever done for us? Food, medicine, fuel, and shelter—these are just a few vital resources for which we can thank plants!  As “botanists-in-training”, your students will participate in hands-on activities that reinforce the importance of plants to humans, teach them the purpose of different plant parts, and help them discover amazing plant adaptations. Your botanists will record their findings in a field journal and will be able to continue their field research after the program with their own seedling that they will pot and take home.

Ecosystems and Adaptations (Grades 7-9)

Grades: 7-9
Program Length: 2 hours
Fees: $170

Discover the ecosystems that lie under the Muttart Conservatory's glass pyramids! Students will get their hands dirty as they test soil moisture, temperature and pH, along with air temperature and humidity, in order to determine the differing needs of plants in the tropical, desert and temperate ecosystems. We'll review plant parts, discover plant adaptations to different environments, and see plants that are important for human use. To tie this program together, students will determine which of the pyramids our mystery plants would thrive in, as well as pot a plant to take home.

Christmas Around the World (Preschool - Grade 3)

Grades: Preschool - Grade 3
Program Length: 1.5 hours (Preschool), 2 hours (Kindergarten - Grade 3)

Available: November 28 - December 22

‘Tis the season to enjoy the spirit of the upcoming holidays! Poinsettias, Christmas trees, ginger, frankincense and myrrh — so many plants play an important part in Christmas traditions. Students will have the opportunity to see and smell many of these important plants as they discover Christmas traditions from around the world. Each student will pot a festive plant to take home at the end of the program.

Little Ladybug and Friends (Preschool - Grade 3)

Grades: Pre-school – Grade 3
Program Length: 1.5 (Pre-school) 2 hours (Kindergarten - Grade 3)

Available: September-October, February-June

Learn how the charming ladybug and other cool insects help our gardens grow! Through activities, games, and more, students will learn all about our spotted friends. Experience the world through ladybug eyes, discover their life cycles, and help the conservatory by releasing some beneficial bugs into one of the pyramids! Your students will even pot a plant to take home.

Group Programs

Little Sprouts (Ages 4-6)

Program Length: 1.5 hours (age 4) or 2 hours (ages 4-6)
Available: Year round

During this program, your little sprouts will be introduced to the wonderful world of plants. Through hands-on activities, children will explore plant life in the pyramids as they troop through the tropical and delight in the desert. After some fun and games, each child will plant a seedling to take home.

Ladybugs and Friends (Ages 4-8, Seasonal)

Program Length: 1.5 hours (ages 4-5), 2 hours (ages 6-8)
Available: September & October, February–June

Get to know all about ladybugs and beneficial insects at the Muttart Conservatory. Discover the importance of ladybugs through activities, stories and songs. We’ll even release some real beneficial bugs into one of the pyramids! You'll top this fabulous program off by potting a plant to take home in honour of our insect friends.

Let's Grow (Ages 7-9)

Program Length: 2 hours
Available: Year round

Children will be introduced to secret growing strategies of plants from different parts of the world during this exciting program. Find out how important plants are to humans, and learn how bugs can benefit the plants in the pyramids. After a fun-filled journey through the biomes, each participants will pot a plant to take home and nurture.

Globetrotting Botanists (Ages 9-12)

Program Length: 2 hours
Available: Year round

Participants are provided with the tools of the trade to become official botanists! As we explore a tropical escape, an arid climate and a temperate garden, these budding botanists will discover the survival strategies of plants from different parts of the planet. We'll uncover exciting facts and learn about the importance of plants to people. After our investigations are complete, we'll pot our very own plant to take home!

Gardener's Badge (Ages 10-12)

Program Length: 2 hours
Available: Year round

Through a variety of activities, young people will be introduced to the basics of gardening. Children will discover the importance of soil, learn how composting helps gardeners and even visit with our resident vermicomposting worms. Explore the benefits of gardening as you venture through the pyramids. Each child pots a plant, and sows some mystery seeds to take home.

Guided Tour (Adults)

Program Length: 1 hour*

Join a knowledgable interpreter for an hour-long guided tour of the gems of our collection. You’ll explore the lush plant life of the tropical pyramid, discover unique plant adaptations in the arid pyramid and enjoy the changing of the seasons in the temperate pyramid.

* Available during weekday hours and includes facility admission. 

Group Size

The maximum group size in an adult program is 20. Groups exceeding 20 adults must book an additional program.

For groups who arrive exceeding the maximum of 20 adults total, the extra participants will be asked to pay facility admission and enjoy the Muttart Conservatory on their own.

Booking Checklist

Please be prepared with the following information to make your booking:

  • Program name
  • 2-3 potential program dates
  • School mailing address, including postal code, school telephone number, and fax number
  • Contact name and names of teachers for all classes being booked
  • Email address(es) of teacher(s) booking and attending the program
  • Number of students attending
  • Number of supervisors
  • Special needs / accessibility arrangements
  • Name and cell phone number of on-site contact person for programs at your school

Fees and Payment

The amount owing is shown on your program booking confirmation. Payment is required prior to the program. Invoices are sent out by the City on the first of each month. You will receive your invoice in the same month as your program runs. For example: for a May booking, your invoice will be issued May 1. Payment can be made by cheque, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express. Please have cheques made payable to the City of Edmonton and write your booking confirmation numbers on your cheques.

Group Size

The maximum number of students permitted in a program is 30. Groups exceeding 30 students must book an additional program.

Adults are required to remain with their group and supervise participating students at all times during the program. Adult supervisors are admitted free of charge with the program in the following ratios:

  • Pre-school (3-4 years): 1 adult per 3 students
  • Kindergarten - Grade 6: 1 adult per 5 students
  • Grades 7-12: 1 adult per 10 students

Additional adults and students/siblings exceeding these ratios will be asked to pay facility admission fees and tour the facility on their own. Additional participants can rejoin their group after the registered program ends. To ensure a high quality program, we recommend that all students participating are within the age range advertised for the program.

Cancellation and Rescheduling

You are required to submit written notice of cancellation of program(s) via email to cmsschoolbookings@edmonton.ca.

Programs cancelled with 30 days notice or more will not be charged the program fee or a cancellation fee. Programs cancelled with 8-29 days notice are subject to be charged 50% of the program fee, unless the cancellation is filled by a waitlisted group. For programs cancelled with 7 days notice or less, the full program fee will be charged.

Programs run rain or shine. In the event of poor weather, you must call 780-442-1442 or email cmsschoolbookings@edmonton.ca if you are not coming.

Programs cancelled due to severe weather conditions will not be charged a cancellation fee as long as they are rescheduled within the current or upcoming school year fall term (September - November).
