A building that offers affordable housing.

Program Overview

City Council’s approved Affordable Housing Investment Plan (2019-2022) aims to create 2,500 new or renovated affordable housing units across Edmonton over the next 4 years. To meet this goal, the Affordable Housing Investment program provides limited grant funding, targeting shovel-ready projects to eligible non-profit and private sector entities to encourage affordable housing development in our city.

Projects that may be considered for funding include:

  • Affordable near-market rental
  • Affordable home ownership
  • Mixed-income projects with an affordable housing component
  • Mixed-use projects with an affordable housing component
  • Permanent supportive housing projects

There are 3 grants under this program:

  • New Construction
  • Project Development
  • Rehabilitation of Existing Units

We are currently only accepting applications for the New Construction grant, and submission deadline is February 14, 2020

Stay Tuned for Updates

Application dates and information on the Project Development and Rehabilitation of existing units grants will be posted in 2020. Check back for updates.

New Construction Grant

Grant Overview

The New Construction grant provides limited capital funding for constructing new affordable housing units. As a guideline, the City may provide up to 25% of the total capital costs associated with the affordable housing component of a project.

For a development to qualify for this grant, the project must have a minimum of 5 units with 30% of the units designated as affordable. Please note that in order to receive the maximum contribution amount, your project would need to score exceptionally high on the evaluation criteria.

All grant applicants are required to meet with a City housing representative to discuss the project proposal. This step helps to determine if the proposal meets eligibility requirements for the program.

Once the proposal review is complete and eligibility has been confirmed with a City housing representative, you can then apply for the New Construction grant.
