Candidate Nomination Process

If you wish to run as a candidate for Mayor, City Councillor, or Trustee of the Edmonton School Division or the Edmonton Catholic Separate School Division in the 2021 Edmonton General Election, you must complete the nomination process.

This means:

  • Meeting all eligibility requirements
  • Completing the nomination papers and candidate's acceptance form
  • Paying the required deposit
  • Collecting the required signatures from residents

The nomination processes for Mayor, City Councillor, and School Division Trustee are different.

Nomination papers can be filed during the nomination period: January 4, 2021 to September 20, 2021.

Further information on where to file nomination papers will be available in December 2020. 

Eligibility to run as a candidate

To register as a candidate in the 2021 Edmonton general election, you must be eligible to vote. This means you must be:

  • At least 18 years old
  • A Canadian citizen; and
  • A resident of Edmonton for the six consecutive months immediately before Nomination Day (September 20, 2021)

There may be other reasons an individual is ineligible to register as a candidate. You can find more information in sections 21-24 of the Local Authorities Election Act.

If you wish to register as a school division trustee candidate, you are encouraged to review sections 4(4) and 74 of the Education Act.

Candidates for Mayor

If you wish to run for Mayor, you must collect signatures from at least 100 individuals.

An individual who provides a signature to a candidate for Mayor must:

  • Live in Edmonton and
  • Be eligible to vote in the Edmonton General Election on the date of signing the nomination:
    • At least 18 years old
    • A Canadian citizen; and
    • Reside in Alberta. Their place of residence must be located in Edmonton on Election Day

To register as a candidate for Mayor, you must pay a deposit of $500 when filing nomination papers. This deposit can be paid in cash or by certified cheque or money order.

Candidates for Councillor

If you wish to run for Councillor, you must collect signatures from at least 25 individuals.

An individual who provides a signature to a candidate for Councillor must:

  • Live in the Ward in which the candidate seeks election and
  • Be eligible to vote in the Edmonton General Election on the date of signing the nomination:
    • At least 18 years old
    • A Canadian citizen; and
    • Reside in Alberta - Place of residence must be located in Edmonton on Election Day

To register as a candidate for Councillor, you must pay a deposit of $100 when filing Nomination Papers. This deposit can be paid in cash or by certified cheque or money order.

Edmonton's ward boundaries are changing. It is important to understand what ward boundaries may look like on the date of the 2021 Edmonton general election. For more information, including maps of the proposed wards, please visit edmonton.ca/wardboundary.

Candidates for School Division Trustee

If you wish to run for school division trustee, you must collect signatures from at least 25 individuals.

An individual who provides a signature to a candidate for School Division Trustee must:

  • Live in the Ward in which the candidate seeks election and
  • Be eligible to vote in the Edmonton General Election on the date of signing the nomination:
    • At least 18 years old
    • A Canadian citizen; and
    • Reside in Alberta. Their place of residence must be located in Edmonton on Election Day

You must pay a deposit of $100 when filing nomination papers. This deposit can be paid in cash or by certified cheque or money order.

Before completing the nomination process, you are encouraged to review sections 4(4) and 74 of the Education Act.

Note: The ward boundaries for the Edmonton School Division have been amended in effect for the 2021 Election. Refer to the Edmonton Public Schools Bylaw 2020-2 for the new ward boundaries.
