LRT Station Elevators and Escalators
Riding the Escalators/Elevators
Transit patrons who use canes may ride escalators but must remember to stand properly and hold on to the handrail. Patrons using major mobility devices (wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, etc.), patrons accompanied by a guide or service dog, and patrons with strollers should use elevators. All patrons with mobility challenges should use the elevators in the LRT station should an escalator not be operational.
Downtown Pedway System
The downtown area in Edmonton has an extensive pedway system that enables pedestrians to move throughout the downtown area in a weather protected environment. The pedway network is comprised of public and private buildings and walkways. Pedway maps are located throughout the system and identify location of various elevators and entrances. Many of these are not under the authority of Edmonton Transit. The operating condition and operating hours for these non-Transit entrances and elevators are out of Edmonton Transit’s control and may not match the operating hours for ETS.
Escalators
Escalators are located in several LRT stations, as a convenience, to make it easier to access the stations. Generally, the escalators are set to operate in the “up” direction from the platform and concourse areas to the station exit, or concourse areas to the platform. Stations with this type of escalator setup are: Clareview, Belvedere, Coliseum, Stadium, Churchill, Central, Bay/Enterprise Square, Corona, Grandin, University, Southgate, and Century Park.
A limited number of LRT stations are equipped with escalators that operate in the “down” direction from concourse levels to the platform. Stations with this type of escalator setup are: Bay/Enterprise Square, Corona, Grandin, and University.
LRT Station Elevators
Elevator access is available in all underground LRT stations, either directly to the station or through private buildings adjacent to the LRT. There are 29 elevators and 36 escalators located on ETS property which are operated and maintained by LRT Facilities Section. Each elevator is equipped with a two-way intercom or phone. Instructions on use are available in raised print and Braille. Please follow the instructions should you require assistance while you are on-board an elevator.
Elevator Operating Status
Edmonton Transit LRT Elevator Information Line
780-496-4154
The Edmonton Transit LRT Elevator Information Line identifies LRT elevators that are out of service for major repair. The information is updated on a daily basis.
Elevators are taken out of service for short periods of time to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs. These interruptions are less than four hours in duration and are performed between 10am and 2pm (outside of peak operating times) when possible.
Schedule of planned outages for routine maintenance
Before an LRT elevator is taken out of service for any type of maintenance, Edmonton Transit’s elevator contractor is required to notify LRT Control. For minor service interruptions, signs indicating the elevator closure will be posted at all ETS-owned elevators that access the affected LRT station. Signage at the station will include information on alternate routing to or from the LRT system. When an LRT elevator is out of service for major repair, signs will be posted at all LRT stations on the system at designated accessible entrances.
Requesting Assistance
Should you arrive at an elevator that is out of service and require assistance please call 311. You may also use any of the available security features (Blue Emergency Phones, Direct Access Phones, Emergency Push Buttons) on the system to initiate communication with ETS staff.
