Edmonton is planning for its future – to grow into a healthy, urban and climate resilient city of 2 million people. Our goal is to be a neighbourly city with a strong sense of community and personal wellness that embodies and promotes equity for all Edmontonians.

As part of this, the City is looking at places where lowering speed limits can create safe, livable streets for everyone and help us reach our goal of Vision Zero. Reducing speeds can make our streets calmer, quieter, and safer for people walking, biking, driving and enjoying their neighbourhood. Safety is the priority.

Project Status

City Administration presented a thorough analysis of both a 40 km/h citywide default and a 30 km/h Core Zone by weighing safety impacts, public perspective, existing collision data, costs and signage plans.

On March 11, 2020, City Council endorsed: 

  • A default speed limit of 40 km/h for residential roads throughout Edmonton
  • A 40 km/h speed limit for Jasper Avenue, Whyte Avenue and a number of high pedestrian areas 

Exception Roadways

The City completed a systematic road network review to identify where reduced speed limits could increase safety and livability in Edmonton’s neighbourhoods. Roadways that would not support a lowered speed limit were identified and were brought forward for Council’s consideration.

Trip Times

Reducing speed limits will have very little impact on trip times. The Estimated Time of Arrival tool has been developed to show how driving times could change given the new default speed of 40 km/h.

Next Steps

Bylaw changes are required to change the default speed limit for roads in Edmonton to 40 km/h. This speed limit is expected to change in late summer or early fall 2021.

Speed limit signs will be added, removed or updated where required; this will include providing signs where speed limits transition from one to another.  The City has developed a refreshed signage approach that will reduce the number of road signs on our streets wherever possible.

City Administration will partner with the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) throughout the roll-out of speed limit reductions to ensure clear and consistent public messaging and education efforts.

The Safe Mobility Strategy 2021-2025, currently under development, is Edmonton’s approach to advancing Vision Zero. It is a key component of the City's strategic goals for the next 10 years and supports ConnectEdmonton in creating a safe, healthy, urban and climate resilient city for all residents.
