Edmonton Household Travel Survey
Providing insight into travel patterns that will shape our future.

The Edmonton Household Travel Survey is being conducted by the City of Edmonton, in cooperation with Alberta Transportation and the Capital Region Board, to understand the transportation needs of a growing population in Edmonton and across the region.

The survey collects information from participating households in Edmonton and the region about:

  • Where people go
  • Why they go
  • When they go
  • How they get where they need to go

We need your participation so that we have the information we need to plan for the Region’s transportation needs today and for the future. Select households received invitations to participate by mail and invitations were sent out to the Edmonton Insight Community.

Registration for the travel survey has now closed. To submit your travel and activity information, please follow the instructions below.

Submit Your Household Travel & Activity Diary Beginning December 4

Please submit your information 1 to 2 days after your assigned travel day.

Option 1: Online

Option 2: Phone 780-229-1878

Option 3: Mail using the postage paid envelope. Please submit only Form A and all of your Travel & Activity Diaries (Forms B and C).

All information is required by December 13, 2014

What are households being asked to do?

Households who agree to participate in the survey are asked to keep a diary of activities and travel for all members of the household for one day during the week of December 3 to 9. Then they can choose to submit their information either online, by phone, or by mail.

How will results be used?

Information from the survey will be used by the City of Edmonton, Capital Regional Board and Alberta Transportation to support and inform transportation planning in Edmonton and the surrounding region.

Information from the 2005 Household Travel Survey helped:

  • Develop Edmonton’s Transportation Master Plan – The Way We Move
  • Plan for LRT expansion
  • Prioritize and design new roads - both in the city and the region, for example, Anthony Henday Drive

Personal information will be collected in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act of Alberta. All information obtained from the Edmonton Household Travel Survey will be kept completely confidential.

Why should I participate in the survey?

We all rely on our transportation system in one way or another. We walk, cycle, use transit or drive to the places we need to go. For municipal planners to create an efficient transportation system that is responsive to people’s needs, we depend on up-to-date information, including people’s travel patterns.

This is your opportunity to share with us how you get around and when, so that we can make the right decisions when renewing roads, adding or changing bus routes or planning for your other travel needs.

A diversity of information is important to us, so why not consider adding your voice to the mix?

What is the process for participating?

  1. An invitation to participate is received by mail or by email
  2. Register to participate in the survey
  3. Receive your “Travel and Activity Diary” package in the mail
  4. Record all travel and activities for 24 hours during your assigned survey day
  5. Submit your “Travel and Activity Diary” online, by phone, or by mail
