The City of Edmonton is in the Concept phase to upgrade 162 Avenue (between 139 Street and 142 Street) from a rural to an urban road. Along with the roadway improvement, the City is working with CN Rail on plans to improve safety at the rail crossing and silence the train whistle.

Project Details

This project will include:

  • Road reconstruction and widening
  • Installation of curbs and gutters 
  • New sidewalk and boulevard on south side of the roadway
  • Upgraded light poles to metal and LED lights
  • New access to properties along 162 Avenue
  • Tree removal
  • Landscaping 
  • Underground utility work
  • Railway crossing arms

Timeline

The project is proposed to start in spring of 2019.

No dates can be set for construction until the final design is completed and a contractor is selected in the spring.

Public Engagement

162 Avenue is About to be Urbanized

On October 11, the City held a drop-in event where attendees could learn about the proposed upgrades to 162 Avenue and share their input on the project.

At the event, attendees could:

  • Learn more about the project and what improvements are planned
  • Learn about the CN Rail safety upgrades and plans to silence the train whistle
  • Learn how this project may impact your travel route
  • Share input on how citizens use the roadway to drive, walk and ride bikes

Sign up to receive news and updates on the urbanization of 162 Avenue between 139 Street and 142 Street.

For Local Residents

Stakeholder conversations will be held as needed for design and construction considerations.

Bulletins will be shared with residents 2 weeks in advance to keep you informed of the project timelines and activities.

For Community Residents and Commuters

Once construction begins, 162 Avenue will be closed to traffic for the duration of construction except for residents who have property that requires access from 162 Avenue.
