The City is working to improve the quality and safety of 162 Avenue between 139 and 142 Street.

Project Update - May 2020

Thank you to everyone who provided input on the draft design of the 162 Avenue Renewal Project. The Project Team has now finalized the design along with the What We Decided report.

As the design has been finalized, construction on 162 Avenue is anticipated to begin in June 2020. More information about construction will be shared through construction bulletins.

Utility work will be occurring in the area prior to road construction. Both Telus and ATCO Gas will be completing relocation work in May 2020.

Project Overview

The City is upgrading 162 Avenue (between 139 Street and 142 Street). Along with the roadway improvement, the City is working with Canadian National (CN) Rail on plans to improve safety at the rail crossing and silence the train whistle.

Construction Update

The construction on 162 Avenue will consist of the reconstruction of the existing road surface with drainage upgrades and a new sidewalk, curb and gutter.

While this work is underway, you won’t be able to access 162 Avenue from 139 Street to 142 Street as it will be closed to through traffic. If you live on 162 Avenue, the project will be done in 2 phases (see construction staging map). Phase 1 will be from 141 Street to west of the tracks and phase 2 will be from 141 Street to 139 Street.

If you live within the phase 2 limits, you won’t be able to access your driveway during construction. If you plan on coming and going from your home during construction, we recommend that you park outside the boundaries of the work. If required, please arrange for water delivery or septic tank maintenance prior to the start of construction. We apologize in advance for this inconvenience.

While construction is underway, you can park on any on-street parking area in the neighbourhood.

Project History

Project Update - November 2019

Thank you to everyone who took the time to come meet the project team, and to view and share feedback on the draft design for the 162 Avenue Renewal project.

The City hosted 2 public engagement events to present a draft design for the renewal of 162 Avenue—one on November 25, 2019 for residents who live immediately next to the project area, and a community-wide drop-in event on November 27, 2019.

The draft design includes renewed road surface, the addition of a walking surface, curb and gutter construction, and upgraded street lighting. In addition, we are coordinating with CN Rail to install a new warning system for the rail crossing.

The draft design addresses what we heard from stakeholders and the public during previous engagement and the feedback gathered at these events will help to inform the final design for the renewal.

A draft concept was last presented to the community for feedback in October 2018. Further technical analysis revealed that construction of the draft design as presented would require additional drainage infrastructure, resulting in extensive impacts to private property and significantly increased costs.

Project Update - March 2019

We are nearing completion of the preliminary design and are moving toward creating detailed designs. Work and planning with CN Rail to improve safety at the rail crossing and silence the train whistle continue to move forward.

Utility work in the project area is expected to begin in fall, with road construction expected to follow in 2020.

Public Engagement - October 2018

On October 11, the City held a drop-in event where attendees learned about the proposed upgrades to 162 Avenue and shared their input on the project.

At the event, attendees learned:

  • More about the project and what improvements were planned
  • About the CN Rail safety upgrades and plans to silence the train whistle
  • How this project may impact travel routes

Residents also shared information about how they use the roadway to drive, walk and ride bikes.
