The City of Edmonton is removing the stamped, red-brick crosswalk from the 8 locations along 124 Street, from 110 Avenue to 102 Avenue. The durable thermoplastic material used in the design (Methyl Methcrylate - MMA) is deteriorating earlier than expected and must be removed for public safety.

This pilot project allowed the City to study and test how decorative crosswalks affect traffic safety, and will apply what was learned from this project with other innovative ways to address and enhance your safety as pedestrians and drivers. The City thanks everyone who contributed feedback during the pilot.

Starting Wednesday October 2, work crews will be grinding down the crosswalks weekdays from 9am-3pm. Traffic will be accommodated as much as possible and controlled with flaggers. The crosswalks will be paved Saturday October 5 from 7am-7pm, with businesses access ways completed first before businesses open. Parking along 124 Street will be restricted during this time. Work is intended to be finished by October 11.

Crosswalk Locations

  • 103 Avenue
  • 106 Avenue
  • 107 Avenue
  • 108 Avenue
  • 109 Avenue
  • 109A Avenue
  • 110 Avenue

The request for enhanced crosswalks was made by the 124 Street Business Association. The crosswalks will have a brighter, more colourful design that is easier to see. The material is a durable thermoplastic that can last for up to 5 years, and has a rough texture that prevents slipping when the surface is wet.

Traffic and Pedestrian Monitoring

The City will be conducting traffic studies and pedestrian surveys at select intersections to measure pedestrian and driver behaviour before and after the crosswalks are installed.

The information gathered from these studies will be used to help inform decisions on similar projects in other neighbourhoods.

Project Timeline

  • May 28 - June 3, 2018: Traffic study
  • Week of June 4, 2018: Crosswalk installation
