Fire Rescue Services

Step 1 - Development Permit

Apply for a Minor Development Permit. This will provide the required approval for the zoning approval for the suite.

A fee of $133 will be collected at the Development permit application stage to cover the cost of fire inspection.

Step 2 - Property Evaluation

Fire Codes Officers will only schedule inspections upon referral from the Development Permits office. Phone calls and emails cannot confirm that a Development Permit has been applied for and approved with a declaration of the pre 2006 date.

Step 3 - Evaluation Letter

An evaluation letter will be provided indicating the upgrading requirements needed to bring the dwelling unit into compliance with the requirements of the Alberta Fire Code.

Step 4 - Building Permit

You will be required to apply for any further building permits for plumbing and gas, electrical, as well as heating and ventilation, depending on the scope of the work.

You will be required to provide a copy of the Fire Prevention Branch's evaluation letter when applying for this permit.

Step 5 - Safety Reinspection

A safety reinspection will be conducted to confirm compliance with the requirements of the Alberta Fire Code.

The compliance time frame will usually be 3 months, depending on the amount of upgrading required.

If there are outstanding deficiencies requiring additional reinspections, an additional fee of $133 will be applied in accordance with Bylaw 15309.

Further non compliance may be addressed using legal process in accordance with the Alberta Safety Codes Act.

Step 6 - Compliance Letter

A compliance letter will be issued to the owner of the property by the Fire Prevention Branch.
