Animal Care and Control Centre

As of May 25, 2020 Animal Care & Control will begin the intake of stray dogs and will continue to intake animals that are in distress, injured or sick (including pregnant cats and kittens under two months without a mother).

Until further notice, the ACCC will not admit healthy cats.

All services require an appointment and can be made by calling 311 or visiting edmonton.ca/pets. You must also make an appointment to pick up your lost pet.

Dog Parks

Adjustments

Effective Saturday, May 16 Alex Decoteau and Paisley off-leash fenced dog parks are reopening for pets and their owners. Alex Decoteau off-leash dog park access will be restricted to a maximum occupancy of 15 people at all times.

Manning Village will remain closed due to maintenance.

Guidelines

To reduce the potential for virus transmission, we are not providing bags in any off-leash area or fenced dog park. The City reminds dog park users to bring their own bags and to pick up after your pet.

Please continue to practice physical distancing when you use off-leash areas and clean your hands after touching gates or latches, as these surfaces are not sanitized.

Peace officers will be monitoring the off-leash areas to ensure people continue to follow physical distancing and maximum occupancy rules.

Physical Distancing in Public Spaces

Edmontonians are reminded to use caution and follow physical distancing guidelines and practical recommendations when interacting in public spaces.

Please keep your physical distance; at least 2 metres from others, whether it's on trails, in parks, on stairs, or buying groceries. It’s important to follow physical distancing practices as outlined by Alberta Health Services.

Park Rangers and security personnel will be patrolling parks, staircases, and trails to support closures and physical distancing requirements.

Canada Day

City of Edmonton Cancels Canada Day Fireworks

April 24, 2020

In response to provincial COVID-19 physical distancing requirements, the City of Edmonton is cancelling this year’s Canada Day fireworks shows and celebrations in City Hall and Sir Winston Churchill Square. City Administration made the decision as physical distancing requirements will remain in place on July 1, 2020.

Edmontonians may instead wish to take in the Virtual Canada Day celebration, hosted by the Federal Ministry of Canadian Heritage.

Please see the public service announcement for more information.

Community Gardens

To help support Edmontonians’ access to fresh food and ease the worry of food security for many, the City of Edmonton is expanding the number of community gardens this year through the creation of a temporary pop-up community garden pilot on City owned land.

These Pop-Up Gardens consist of raised beds designed for community food production, and provide a safe recreational opportunity. They will be removed after the growing season has ended.

The application process is closed. Evaluation is underway and results will be shared with all applicants by the end of May.

Garage Sales

To help slow the spread of COVID-19, garage sales are not permitted to operate at this time and licences are not being issued. Garage sales are considered a non-essential service.

Citizens who need to sell or give away items are asked to create ‘online garage sales’ through platforms like Kijiji and Facebook MarketPlace and coordinate contactless sales and pick-ups.

Seniors-Serving Centres

The City of Edmonton has closed the Mill Woods Seniors Centre, North Edmonton Seniors Association and Central Lions Seniors Association until further notice to protect the health and safety of Edmontonian seniors. For more information about COVID-19 as it relates to Alberta's seniors, visit alberta.ca/covid-19.

Libraries

Edmonton Public Library has closed all branches. Learn more at epl.ca/covid-19.

Litter

The City is providing Capital City Clean Up kits to grocery stores and pharmacies across Edmonton in response to an increase of personal protective equipment (PPE) litter in recent weeks. The kits include:

  • A litter grabber
  • Gloves
  • Garbage bags
  • Other resources to help business owners

Businesses are encouraged to place garbage bins outside store exits and in parking lots to help limit litter in these areas. As PPE is not recyclable, Edmontonians can do their part by putting any gloves and masks in the garbage bins provided.
