About the Project

The City of Edmonton has completed a Strategic Plan for the development of Yellowhead Trail to become a freeway. This expansion is part of Edmonton's Transportation Master Plan and will help to move goods and services more efficiently along this section of the Inner Ring Road.

On December 16, 2016, the federal and provincial governments joined the City of Edmonton to announce joint funding for improving the Yellowhead Trail to better accommodate current and future traffic levels. The federal and provincial governments are each contributing up to $241.6 million, with the City of Edmonton providing remaining funding for a total of over $1 billion.

The proposed plan will improve traffic flow along Yellowhead Trail as traffic volumes continue to grow and will significantly improve safety at several high-collision locations.

The recommended strategic plan will keep Yellowhead Trail as a 6-lane roadway, but upgrade it to a freeway while minimizing the impact on the surrounding developed areas as much as possible. The plan will include the closure of a number of intersections, addition of service roads in select areas, and the addition of a number of interchanges. The Transportation Bylaw has been amended by City Council to designate Yellowhead Trail as a proposed freeway.

In addition to the closure of intersections, several new interchanges will be constructed over time.
