The City is replacing the existing Mill Woods Transit Centre to offer a closer connection to the future Mill Woods Stop on the Valley Line LRT.

Public Information Session - August 2019

Thank you to everyone who attended our August 20, 2019 Public Information Session. Display boards and event materials were distributed to help residents learn about the final design and what to expect during construction.

About the Project

This project is aligned with the Mill Woods Station Area Redevelopment Plan implementation. The new Transit Centre will be an approximate 1-2 minute walk (100m) from the future Mill Woods Stop on the Valley Line Southeast LRT Extension.

The transit centre has been designed to simplify transit to transit connections and will integrate with the future private development and active pedestrian transportation network in the area. This project aligns with the planned Transit Oriented Development (TOD) on the site.

Where We Are

Construction will begin in fall 2019 with anticipated completion in late 2020. Construction in 2019 will largely consist of parking lot work around the professional building and potentially some other underground utility work throughout the site.

The new transit centre will provide:

  • A large heated shelter

  • Public washrooms

  • A kiss and ride passenger drop-off

  • Opportunities for small kiosks

  • Smaller shelters located along the length of the platforms

The site has been designed to minimize service impacts during any future expansion, as well as the integration of the Valley Line LRT and TOD which is reflected in the current zoning for the site.

Construction Impacts

  • Construction vehicles will park in the laydown area to avoid parking congestion

  • Construction activities will comply with all related bylaws

  • Some access closures will be required to ensure public safety

Access to the mall and surrounding businesses will be maintained during construction. Please follow the detours on site.

Project History

On September 16 2013, Council approved the Mill Woods Station Area Redevelopment Plan (Bylaw 16408). It recognizes the area's strategic location within southeast Edmonton and will guide its transition from a primarily low-density, auto-oriented environment toward a more vibrant, mixed-use community. This future development will complement the surrounding neighbourhoods and establish a true urban centre for residents in southeast Edmonton.

The goals of the Station Area Redevelopment Plan are to:

  • Determine a vision for transit oriented development in Mill Woods

  • Facilitate appropriate development in the station area

  • Respect the unique character and history of the Mill Woods area

In November 2013, City Council approved the Valley Line Southeast LRT Final Preliminary Design. In alignment with the Mill Woods Station Area Redevelopment Plan, the design included an LRT stop at Mill Woods Town Centre.

In December 2015, the City received a proposal to rezone the Mill Woods Town Centre Mall. Two open houses were held in May 2016 and March 2017 to collect feedback and provide information on the rezoning application. A total of 900 people attended these 2 events. The open houses included information on the proposed transit centre concept plan.

The rezoning application and the Mill Woods Station Area Redevelopment Plan were amended in April 2017. This amendment included the relocation of the Mill Woods Transit Centre to foster better integration with the future Valley Line Southeast LRT. The rezoning application and accompanying amendment to the Mill Woods Station Area Redevelopment Plan was approved at a City Council public hearing on July 10, 2017.
