About the Project

In spring 2017 the City began the rehabilitation of the Rainbow Valley access bridge over Whitemud Creek, under Whitemud Drive. Maintenance and rehabilitation will repair damaged components to ensure the bridge is in a safe, functional condition for many more years.

Bridge Description and Rehabilitation

The Rainbow Valley Access Bridge was constructed in 1971 and consists of a three-span box-girder superstructure. It is located within Rainbow Valley along Rainbow Valley Road and provides access to Snow Valley Ski Club and the Rainbow Valley Campground. The bridge carries approximately 750 vehicles per day and provides an important link to some of the City’s most well-known outdoor features.

Construction

Construction will occur in two stages to allow continued local traffic access. Each stage involves closing half the bridge for construction while the other half maintains one lane of bi-directional traffic controlled with temporary signals. Pedestrians and cyclists will be accommodated on the bridge during construction.

Rehabilitation Activities

  • The bridge surfacing will be removed and replaced with a concrete overlay
  • New bridge barriers will be added
  • New bridge deck joints will be added
  • Deteriorated concrete will be repaired
  • Bridge headslopes will be re-graded and the erosion wash-out repaired
  • Creek bank erosion control protection consisting of vegetated rip-rap will be added
  • Roadway geometry and trail connections will be improved
  • New curb and gutter for improved drainage will be added

For pedestrians and cyclists:

  • Narrow sidewalks replaced with a 3.6 m shared use path on the south side of the bridge
  • New pedestrian railing will be added
  • New marked pedestrian crossing will be installed
