Project Update - April 2018

In late 2017, planning for Fort Edmonton Park evolved further into design and identified there is no need for two metering buildings, and therefore, reconfiguration of Whitemud Road into Fort Edmonton Park is not necessary. As a result, construction funding for this road rehabilitation project is not available. Upgrades to Whitemud Road will be considered as part of future renewal projects in adjacent neighbourhoods.

Rehabilitation of aging road infrastructure remains a City priority and is assessed every year. The road conditions will be considered as part of this annual review and repair work may occur in spring 2018 if necessary.

About the Project

Planning for the Whitemud Road Rehabilitation Project began in 2016 and was initiated due to the adjacent Fort Edmonton Park Enhancement Project. Preliminary planning of the Fort Edmonton Park Project included building new utility metering buildings which could have impacted the existing road, eventually leading to the need for surface roadway improvements and trail connections. The City of Edmonton was considering an opportunity to coordinate construction in the area and upgrade part of Whitemud Road that leads to the river valley trails (west of 58 Avenue in the Brander Gardens area).

The City organized a public engagement session on Tuesday May 2, 2017 to build awareness of the proposed project and gather feedback from local residents and the general public. Internal engagement also occurred to better understand impacts in the area related to the Fort Edmonton Park Project.
