Project Update - October 2019

What has happened so far?

  • The City met with 17 stakeholder groups to discuss their values and vision for 144 Avenue between 50 Street and 97 Street.

  • A draft set of vision and values were developed from the information collected at these meetings. The vision and values were shared with the public on June 19, 2019 to gather feedback on this information and on potential elements that could be included in the 144 Avenue Concept Planning Study.

  • A What We Heard Report was prepared from the June 2019 event.

What's next?

There are many City studies being undertaken that will contribute to a successful 144 Avenue Concept Planning Study. These include the Bus Network Redesign, Edmonton Bike Plan and The City Plan

These studies are anticipated to be completed in late 2019 or early 2020. Once completed, they will help guide the design of the 144 Avenue corridor and provide information requested by the public in June.

About the Project

The City has initiated a Concept Planning Study for 144 Avenue, between 50 Street and 97 Street, which will support the design of a safe and welcoming street for all users. It will consider traffic and pedestrian safety, access management, parking and accommodation for cars, transit, bikes and pedestrians.

144 Avenue is currently a 4-lane divided collector roadway with occasional on-street parking lanes, providing access to 7 neighbourhoods: Evansdale, Kilkenny, McLeod, Casselman, Kildare, York, and Northmount. Once the Concept Planning Study is completed, it will inform design decisions for the future renewal plans of the corridor.

Public Engagement - June 2019

The project team held a public event on June 19, 2019 to discuss the future of 144 Avenue, between 50 Street and 97 Street. Feedback and ideas collected will be used to develop the look and feel for the road such as parking, landscape, crosswalks, curbs and more.

Prior to this event, the project team met with stakeholder groups in the community to kick off the development of the vision and values for this project. Attendees had the opportunity to provide feedback on a draft Vision Statement and values list, and help establish priorities moving forward.
