November 2013 - Construction Update

Jasper Avenue reopened to traffic October 16. Work on the Central LRT Station concourse underground continues into December. The final streetscape work will be the installation of decorative streetlights in spring 2014.

August 2013 - Construction Update

  • Demolition of south sidewalk is complete. Concrete sidewalk slab construction has begun.
  • Central LRT Station smoke exhaust structure is complete.
  • Roadway concrete surface complete except for southeast quadrant of 101 Street.
  • Structural steel columns, fireproofing in Central LRT Station nearing completion.
  • Installation of decorative streetscape elements underway.
  • On August 11, the traffic on 101 Street flipped from the east side to the west side.
  • Paving stone installation will begin mid-August.
  • On August 26, the grinding and paving of the asphalt roadways begins.

August Project Update

January 2013 – Construction Update

Jasper Avenue between 100 Street and 102 Street remains reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction for the duration of the project. Construction of the north side of Jasper Avenue is expected to be completed by the end of March, with sidewalks opening as they are completed. Work will then switch to the south side of Jasper Avenue in April. The project is anticipated to be completed by October 2013.

December 2012 – Construction Update

Jasper Avenue between 100 Street and 102 Street will remain reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction for the duration of the project. Construction is behind schedule, however the project is still anticipated to be completed by October 2013.

To bring the project back on schedule, crews will begin heating and hoarding to complete the north sidewalk on Jasper Avenue over the winter. Once the sidewalk is complete, vehicle traffic will be moved to the north side of Jasper Avenue for excavation to begin on the south side in spring 2013.

November 2012 - Construction Update

  • Placement of the roadway concrete is scheduled for completion this month, with the exception of the west side of 101 Street.
  • Asbestos remediation is near completion in the main corridor, moving into the west concourse in mid-November.
  • The remaining traffic bases and streetlight installation is to continue through November.
  • Sidewalk construction on 102 Street and 100 Street is underway.
  • In the third week of November, the 101 Street traffic will be diverted onto the east side of the roadway so that work can be completed on the west side.

October 2012 - Construction Update

  • Placement of the roadway concrete will be underway throughout October with the remaining portions at the east end of the station and the west side of 101 Street scheduled for November.
  • Asbestos remediation will begin in the main corridor and the west concourse. Remediation is expected to take until December to complete.
  • The signals and streetlight bases are to be placed in October.
  • Sidewalk construction on 102 Street and 100 Street will begin in October.

September 2012 - Construction Update

  • Surface concrete to be poured throughout September and October and will require some re-routing of pedestrian traffic at various times to allow for sidewalk construction. Signals and streetlight installation will also be happening during this time frame.
  • Demolition and asbestos remediation on the east concourse will be complete by the end of September and demolition and remediation in the main corridor and west concourse will continue through until the end of November. The concourse work is expected to carry on through the winter.
  • Placement of the permanent streetlight bases is expected in September.
  • Jasper Avenue is scheduled to be opened to 2 lanes of traffic in both directions over the winter months. When the 2013 construction season begins it will be restricted to one lane in each direction as work resumes.

August 2012 - Construction Update

  • Asbestos remediation is ongoing in the east concourse. Remediation in the east concourse is expected to be complete in late August or early September. Remediation will move on to the west concourse and central corridor following completion in the east.
  • The interior bracing of the station roof is expected to begin in September.
  • Roadway demolition is almost complete for the 2012 scope of work. Curb, gutter, and roadway concrete will be placed through August on Jasper Avenue and the side streets.
  • Structural concrete work is ongoing on the north edge of the station. Approach slabs and the new topping slab for the station are expected to be placed in September.
  • Interim streetlights and signals expected to be placed in September. Final decorative poles will be erected in 2013.

July 2012 - Construction Update

  • The pouring of the concrete roof slab of the new LRT Station will begin in August.
  • In August, Epcor will be placing the permanent streetlight bases but will be using temporary galvanized poles until the design of the permanent poles is finalized.
  • Traffic in the area will continue to be restricted to a single lane in each direction for the duration of the project.

March 29, 2012 - Public Information Session

City of Edmonton staff and consultants hosted a pre-construction public information session regarding the construction of Central Station LRT rehabilitation and Jasper Avenue (100 St. to 102 St.) Streetscape on Thursday, March 29.

October 5, 2011 - Public Information Session

Downtown residents were joined by Councillors Batty and Henderson on October 4, 2011 to view the designs and project details for the 2012 rehabilitation of the Central LRT Station and the implementation of the first stage of the Jasper Avenue New Vision Streetscaping.

Held at Enterprise Square, the Information Session featured the display boards below and was attended by project team members from both the City of Edmonton and the consultants involved in the project. Residents and stakeholders were invited to speak with the project team to discuss the details of the project and to provide their comments.
