Project Update - August 2019

Thank you to everyone who provided their feedback at the June public event and the online survey. A What We Heard document has been created that includes all feedback from both the public event and the online survey. From the feedback collected, the final design will accommodate soft and hard landscaping including: grass, feature walls, planting and seating areas. Prior to construction, there will be a pre-construction public event to provide information about construction timelines.

Plaza Design

105 Avenue is emerging as a key corridor in the revitalization of the Downtown north edge.

In 2016, the City constructed the Phase 1 streetscape improvements from 116 Street to 119 Street, to help make 105 Avenue more accessible and pedestrian friendly. This construction is based on the 2013 preliminary design focused on 105 Avenue between 109 Street and 119 Street.

In 2017, the City refreshed the 2013 preliminary design with an emphasis on protected bike lanes. Two options for protected bike lanes were shown at the drop-in public meeting February 13, 2018. These options were:

  • Two-way protected bike lane with one-way vehicle traffic and a parking lane
  • One-way protected bike lane with two-way vehicle traffic

February 2019: Plaza Stakeholder Workshop

The City held a Stakeholder Workshop on February 23, 2019 where representatives from communities were invited to advise the project team on preferred uses for the plaza. The workshop looked at opportunities and constraints, who will use the plaza and what activities are envisioned in the location.

January 2019: Project Update

The recommended design shared at the October 30, 2018 public event was presented and approved by City Council's Urban Planning Committee in November 2018. 

In December 2018, City Council approved the construction budget for 105 Avenue from 109 Street -116 Street as a part of the 2019-2022 budget deliberations. Utility relocation for this area is anticipated to begin in 2019 with roadway construction anticipated to start in 2021.

October 30, 2018: Public Information Session

The City held an information session on October 30, 2018 where residents were invited to view the updated preliminary design and alternatives that were considered, which were presented to City Council. Members of the project team were also available to answer any questions that attendees had regarding the project.

What We Heard

February 13, 2018: Preliminary Design Update

On February 13, the project team met with the public to share the preliminary design update for 105 Avenue Streetscape (Columbia Avenue). Participants were able to provide their feedback and speak with members of the project team about the design plan.

It was identified just prior to the public meeting that possible changes to Phase 1 of 105 Avenue from 116 Street to 119 Street may be needed to provide consistency for cyclists, pedestrians and motorists on both the north and south sides of 116 Street. Potential options were presented in one of the display boards at this public meeting.

The City completed Phase 1 streetscape improvements from 116 Street to 119 Street, to help make 105 Avenue more accessible and pedestrian-friendly. This construction was based on the 2013 preliminary design focused on 105 Avenue between 109 Street and 119 Street.

The City of Edmonton held an open house about the reconstruction and streetscaping of 105 Avenue, between 119 Street and 116 Street. The open house was an informal, drop-in event with visual displays and opportunities for the public to ask have their questions answered.
