The Jasper Place Leisure Centre rehabilitation project is nearing completion. The facility is anticipated to reopen on Monday February 17, 2020.

About the Project

The over 50 year-old Jasper Place Leisure Centre was identified as a priority for rehabilitation. The bulk of the work was “back of house” and necessary to keep the facility operating. This project has refreshed the facility, improving water quality, safety measures and the overall customer experience.

This rehabilitation project was met with numerous unforeseen circumstances that extended the reopening date beyond what we originally planned and communicated.

When visiting the newly refurbished facility, the completed work you might notice includes:

  • A new, accessible front service counter in the lobby
  • A new barrier-free washroom in the lobby
  • A new inclusive changeroom in place of the old fitness centre
  • Refreshed male and female change rooms
  • Refinished pool basin and deck
  • New windows
  • New ceiling over the pool
  • New waterfall in the teach pool
  • New steam room
  • Renewed stairs to the dive tower
  • Additional parking in front of the building

Some of the “back of house” work you might not notice includes:

  • A new pool filtration system
  • Repairs to the roof and building structure
  • A new building drainage system
  • Upgraded mechanical and electrical systems

Project Overview

In 2005, a feasibility study was completed to explore the redevelopment of Jasper Place Leisure Centre into a multi-purpose facility. The study was updated in 2011 and the project was split into 2 phases.

City Council approved funding for phase I in the 2015-2018 capital budget. The first phase of the project will address building lifecycle management and renewal of the fitness and leisure centre. This work involves replacement of the pool deck drainage system, windows, ceiling in the natatorium, structural repairs, waterproofing repairs, retrofit to the aquatic changerooms and development of the family change rooms as identified in the feasibility study. The fitness centre will be moved to St. Francis Xavier Sports Centre.
