Annexation Process banner June 2017Annexation is a provincially legislated process of transferring land from one municipality to another.

The Province outlines a process for annexation in the Municipal Government Act (MGA). Annexations involve negotiations between local governments, public engagement, a formal review and recommendation by the Municipal Government Board (MGB), and a final decision by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. The process can take several years to complete.

Summary of Activities

The City announced its intent to annex in 2013. Since then, we have held open houses and small group meetings, and sent out newsletters and letters to affected landowners and stakeholders. In June of 2017, the City and Leduc County signed an annexation agreement after three years of negotiations. The City  made a formal application to the Municipal Government Board in the Fall of 2017. We anticipate a decision from the Provincial government in early 2019. View a timeline of events below.
