The City of Edmonton Cemeteries is planning for “green burial” areas in two of our seven cemeteries: Northern Lights and South Haven. The exact nature or type of green burial has not been decided upon; however, to define parameters for an ideal green burial, we look to the Green Burial Society of Canada and the five principals for setting up a green burial area. The principals are:

  • No embalming
  • Direct earth burial
  • Ecological restoration and conservation
  • Communal memorialization
  • Optimize land use

The “bio-urn” option will be explored as a possible alternative when the development of the “Green Areas” is laid out. Although it does not strictly meet the principals outlined above, it is one of the options being considered.

Green burial development in the cemeteries is dependent upon the implementation of the Cemeteries Master Plan. This involves the development of roadways, drainage and the logistics surrounding legalities and processes that are required before we begin offering the service. As a result, it may be several years before the service is available. Please check back for updates on planning and implementation.
