Secure Your Load to prevent damage and injury.

Sparing a few moments to properly secure your load can save you from causing damage and injury. You can prevent roadside litter and highway hazards for other drivers by making sure you’re transporting objects safely.

Secure Items Properly

  • Use appropriate tie-downs and/or cargo nets
  • Pack lightweight items under heavier ones
  • Pile sand, gravel or dirt to a maximum of 7.5cm (3 inches) below the top of your container to truck box and cover it
  • Put loose trash into a container with a lid
  • Tie large items such as mattresses or construction material directly to your vehicle
  • Attach flags during the day or lights at night to items that extend beyond your vehicle
  • Double-check that your load is tied down securely before driving

If You Lose Your Load

  • Pull over and retrieve the item if it's safe to do so
  • If removal is impossible, dial 311 so the City can retrieve it. Call the Edmonton Police Service at 780-423-4567 if the unsecured items pose a danger to others

If You See an Unsecured Load

  • Discuss your concern with the driver if it's safe to do so
  • If the issue can't be resolved, record the time, location and description of the problem, including the vehicle's licence plate number
  • Call the Edmonton Police Service complaint line at 780-423-4567
  • Provide your name, contact information and details of your concern in case your testimony is needed in court
