If you have a registered secondary suite on the same property, request to share a set of carts (one 240L garbage cart and one 120L food scraps cart) with the suite and save on your utility bill.

Request to share carts with a Secondary Suite

The request must be submitted by the EPCOR account holder.
Carts can only be shared by suites on the same property. You cannot share carts with a neighbour who lives in a separate structure.
Your rate saving will take effect from the date the extra cart is removed.

Please note: the account holder is responsible for any waste utility rate(s) associated with carts. Residents participating in the cart sharing program only pay one monthly utility rate.

Program Conditions

Where only one unit has a Waste Utility account through EPCOR, the account holder is responsible for Secondary Suite Cart Sharing program and Bylaw 18590 compliance. The account holder will also receive the Utility Bill.
Where both units have Waste Utility accounts through EPCOR, the account holder for one of the accounts will become the primary account holder and will be responsible for waste program and bylaw compliance. The primary account holder will also receive the Utility Bill. The Primary Account Holder must be indicated on the application form.
Participation in the Secondary Suite Cart Sharing program may be cancelled at any time by Waste Services upon issuance of a 30-day notice.
Participation in the Secondary Suite Cart Sharing program may be cancelled by the primary account holder at any time, provided a request for cancellation is submitted three months prior to the date of cancellation. The cancellation will take effect upon issuance of Waste Services of approval of cancellation.
If any of the account holders (primary and/or secondary) closes the associated EPCOR account, participation in the Secondary Suite Cart Sharing program will be cancelled.

FAQ

I requested a cart share. When will my rate savings take effect?

Your new rate takes effect as of the date your cart is exchanged or removed. If this is partway through a billing cycle, you will be charged for the old rate until the cart exchange, and the new rate after.

If we request to share carts with a suite, do we get a larger food scraps cart?

The default cart set is 1 large (240L) garbage cart and 1 small (120L) food scraps cart.

Food scraps carts are only offered in the 120L size.

How do I register my secondary suite so I can receive two sets of carts?

Property owners of suites that are not registered with the City (by way of a development permit) will first need to obtain a development approval for their suite. Please contact 311 or visit edmonton.ca/secondarysuites for further details.

Property owners who have registered with the City via Development Services but haven’t registered their secondary suites with Waste Services will need to call 780-496-5698 to register. A monthly waste utility rate will apply to each unit once you register your suite with Waste Services.

Who can submit the request to share carts?

Waste account holders who pay for the separate monthly utility fee for their secondary suites can submit a request. A waste account holder is the individual who pays the monthly waste utility rate noted on the EPCOR bill. As the garbage cart size impacts the monthly utility rate amount, only the waste account holder can submit this request. If you are not the account holder, please contact that individual to submit the request. If each unit has a separate account holder, each will need to be listed on the application form.

I have a garden suite or duplex. Can I sign up to share carts?

Garden suites are eligible for the Secondary Suites Cart Sharing program, however duplexes and other similar dwelling configurations are not.

Can we split the waste utility fee between our two accounts?

No, one account will be billed the utility fee for this service. In most cases, there is only one account. However for homes with two accounts, one of the accounts must be designated as the primary account and will receive the utility bill.

I have multiple legal suites. Can we all share one set of carts?

Property owners with legal secondary suites who have registered their secondary suites with Waste Services and pay the separate monthly waste services fee for their secondary suites can request that all suites on one property share one set of carts.

How do I know whether my secondary suite cart sharing application is approved?

You will receive an email from Waste Services after a review of your application is completed, indicating whether your application has been approved or not.

Can I opt out of sharing the carts after trying it out for a couple months?

Yes, please contact 311 to cancel that service.
