Waste management FAQ for residents of the new Edmonton south area annexed from Leduc.

How will residents’ garbage be collected after the annexation?

New Edmonton south residents (annexed residents) can access all City of Edmonton garbage, recycling and waste drop-off facilities using their current landfill card. For Eco Stations, disposal rates apply to all Edmonton residents.

The area is fully rural and there are no current plans for weekly waste collection as per what the City heard at Leduc engagement sessions.

Can residents still use the Leduc & District Regional Management Facility?

Yes. Residents can continue to use the Leduc & District Regional Management Facility. The facility is privately owned, so services provided by the facility will not change for annexed residents.

Do residents need new access cards for any waste/recycling facilities?

No. Residents will continue to use their current Leduc Regional Landfill card to dispose of their waste. There is no change in how new Edmonton south residents will drop off their waste to this landfill.

Can residents continue to use the Nisku Sewage Transfer Station for their recycling?

No. The Nisku Sewage Transfer Station is owned and operated by the City of Leduc and provides service to Leduc residents only. New Edmonton south residents will have full access to all City of Edmonton Eco Stations and Recycling Depots.

Can residents use burn barrels to dispose of animal carcasses?

The City of Edmonton does not currently allow burn barrels, but it will endeavour to allow burn barrels on agriculturally-zoned land for a 5-year transition period. After 5 years, landowners will be expected to transition to other waste management methods.

For residents, the Edmonton Waste Management Centre accepts small pets and hunting carcasses only — bagged, or double bagged, for a special handling fee. Small pets can alternatively be bagged and disposed of in household waste. Commercial large animals are not accepted.
