Approximately every 4 years, the Universiade ’83 Foundation Grant provides one time funding to Edmonton-based not-for-profit organizations or public institutions for a project or program that promotes sport or the arts in Edmonton.

Available funds are generated from a trust account established following Edmonton’s hosting of the 1983 World University Games (Universiade).

Applications will be available in April 2022 for the next round of granting.

Eligibility and Priorities

Grant Priorities
Priority Will Be Given to Projects That:
  • Promote awareness of and/or involvement in sport or the arts in Edmonton
  • Enhance an existing art or sport program
  • Develop leadership in the area of sport or the arts
  • Promote partnerships and/or collaborations
  • Provide training for coaches, instructors, artists or performers
  • Create a long term benefit to the creative or financial growth of an organization or institution
Applicant Must:
  • Be a public institution or a not-for-profit organization registered for at least 1 year
  • Have a primary mandate of sport or the arts
  • Have no outstanding reports or debts owed to the City of Edmonton
Ineligible Expenses
Ineligible Expenses:
  • Facility construction or maintenance
  • Travel fares or allowances
  • Costs of projects started before grant is awarded



The review of the applications will be done by staff from the Edmonton Sport Council, Edmonton Arts Council, and a City of Edmonton Community Grant Coordinator. Grant recommendations will be made to the Community Services Advisory Board who will then make recommendations to the Director of Community Resources.

The following criteria will be considered in the review and assessment of applications:

  • Grant priorities
  • Project scope (how many people will benefit)
  • Overall merit (benefits and positive impacts for Edmontonians)
  • Ability of the organization to deliver the project or program

Please complete and submit the Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) Form if your organization hasn't been set up, or you need to update your organization’s contact information with the City.

Final reports should be emailed to within 60 days from the project completion date.
