The City of Edmonton promotes opportunities to acquire skills and improve access to supports that enhance financial security and well-being. The City works with a variety of community partners, including the Edmonton Financial Empowerment Collaborative to support people living on a low income to expand their financial knowledge, reduce debt, grow savings and build assets.

You Can Benefit Navigator is an online tool that provides community workers and Edmontonians easy access to information on a range of local, municipal, provincial and federal benefits and subsidies.

Prosperity Gateways - Cities for Financial Empowerment Project

Prosperity Gateway Wall signageThe City of Edmonton is one of two Canadian cities to partner with Prosper Canada on the Prosperity Gateways-Cities for Financial Empowerment project to improve the financial well-being of residents living on low income. Financial help includes education, coaching/counselling, free tax clinics, and help accessing income benefits.

Financial Empowerment Activities Focus on 3 Key Areas


Activities that focus on improving Edmontonians’ ability to earn include:

  • Increasing access to income boosting benefits and tax credits
  • Increasing income generating opportunities


Activities that focus on improving Edmontonians’ ability to save include:

  • Improving access to financial services and products
  • Increasing consumer awareness and advocating for consumer protection
  • Increasing access to savings


Activities that focus on improving Edmontonians’ ability to build include:

  • Increasing access to financial information, education and coaching
  • Expanding asset building opportunities
