Most of us have experienced the positive aspects of technology. We use it to relax, communicate, learn new things, compose music, make art and much more. In moderation, technology and screens are useful. In today's world, the average child uses screen-based technology for 9 hours a day (Source).

The City of Edmonton’s Family and Community Support Services Program and Attractions and Events are promoting “Family Day Unplugged”, encouraging Edmontonians to spend at least 2 technology-free hours with family and friends this Family Day weekend.

The City has several Family Day events happening in and around Edmonton so be sure to check them all out. Follow the City of Edmonton on Twitter and Facebook for more information about Family Day events going on in the city.

Some examples of unplugged activities include:

  • Playing board games
  • Baking together
  • Participating in one of the many Family Day events happening throughout the city

Why Unplug?

  • Every hour a child spends on sedentary activities delays their bedtime by more than 3 minutes. The average 5-17 year old spends 8.5 hours being sedentary each day.

  • According to the most recent data, Canadians spent 581 minutes a day with major media, which is close to 10 hours of daily media time.
Fun-filled family events and activities at City facilities.
