January 2021

Sirens for Life Campaign

January 1-31, 2021
 
Did you know that 1 person who is seriously injured in a vehicle collision, could need as many as 50 blood donations to help save their life?

First Responders across Canada participate in this annual campaign to roll up their sleeves and donate blood. Citizens are encouraged to sign up and donate as well, in support of their emergency service providers. 

In Edmonton, this partnership involves Canadian Blood Services, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services, Edmonton Police Services, Alberta Health Services Emergency Medical Services, STARS Ambulance, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Learn more.

Burn Awareness Week

February 7-13, 2021

Between January 1 and November 30, 2020, 87 Edmontonians experienced a fire-related injury. In comparison, there were 64 injuries in 2019, 84 injuries in 2018, and 53 in 2017.

This is the second year that Edmonton Fire Rescue Services, in partnership with the Edmonton Firefighters’ Burn Treatment Society, will be formally recognizing this week. This year's theme is "Electrical Safety from Amps to Zap (A to Z)"! Learn more.

Firefighter Recruitment Campaign

March 1-31, 2020

Each spring, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services launches the Firefighter Recruitment campaign to encourage individuals to answer the call, and apply to join the Edmonton Fire Rescue Services team. 

Applications are accepted between March 1 to March 31.
 

April 2020

Fire Cadet Program

April 1-30, 2020

The Edmonton Fire Cadet program (a partnership between Edmonton Fire Rescue Service and ATCO) is an opportunity for high school students to learn about Edmonton Fire Rescue Services, while developing important life skills. Through career internships and work experience, fire cadets have the opportunity to earn up to 6 high school credits for their involvement in the program.

Applications are accepted between April 1 to April 30.

Get Ready in the Park

Each year, during Emergency Preparedness Week, the City of Edmonton’s Office of Emergency Management organizes a free, informative and interactive event - Get Ready in the Park - fun for the whole family.

Home Fire Sprinkler Week

May 17-23, 2020

Home fire sprinklers protect the lives of both residents and firefighters by keeping fires small and giving residents more time to escape a fire. Homeowners can install these systems in new or existing homes. Learn more.

Firefighter Memorial

September 11, 2020

The Edmonton Firefighters Memorial Society holds this annual remembrance service to honour the active and retired members from Edmonton Fire Rescue Services who have passed away during the past year. It is held on a day that also marks the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York, the single greatest loss of firefighters in history.

The ceremony takes place at the Firefighters Memorial Plaza (10318 83 Avenue) at 10am.

Fire Prevention Week

Fire Prevention Week brings awareness to the risks involved with fire and strives to educate everyone about practices that can prevent fires and help people escape safely in the event of a fire.

This year, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services reminds Edmontonians that "a safe kitchen is a prepared kitchen."

Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week

November 1-7, 2020

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services responds to countless carbon monoxide incidents every year. Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week is an opportunity to remind Edmontonians how to prevent carbon monoxide hazards including:

  • Installing and maintaining carbon monoxide alarms
  • Maintaining fuel burning appliances
  • Ensuring proper air flow 
  • Never leaving an idling vehicle in an attached garage

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services will also be distributing information for the Smoke Alarm Program to 600 homes in Alberta Avenue.
