Stub it Right, Don’t Ignite is an important life and property saving campaign initiated by Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS). As one of the top causes of fires in Alberta, the improper disposal of smoking materials causes devastating property damage and poses a significant threat to public safety. The goal of the Stub it Right, Don’t Ignite campaign is to raise awareness about simple and effective practices that will help prevent fires caused by improperly disposed smoking material. We are asking for you to work with us to protect the life, property and environment of Edmonton.

Since 2010, the improper disposal of smoking materials has caused more than $60 million in damages across Edmonton and displaced hundreds of residents from their homes for extended periods of time. These fires often originate on balcony areas of multi-family buildings or in the yards of single family homes. EFRS began the Stub it Right, Don’t Ignite campaign as a way to make Edmonton a safer, more livable city to live, work and play.

Not only are these fires unsafe for Edmontonians and the community, but they also have a negative impact on the environment. Fires in homes, specifically multi-family buildings, can have a harmful effect on air quality. In addition, repairing and rebuilding damaged wood frame buildings requires an extensive amount of natural resources and has a negative impact on Edmonton’s carbon footprint.

Our Stub it Right, Don’t Ignite campaign is a big step in the right direction, but ultimately it is up to Edmontonians to use safe fire practices. By incorporating these practices, you help to keep yourself, your family and your community safe.
