Paint the Rails Mural

Created by artists Carla Rae Taylor, AJA Louden, Dana Belcourt, Matthew Cardinal, and with community collaboration (iWeek 2018), “The River” flows through the seven landing stairwell at University LRT station, closest to the HUB Mall entrance.

Starting from the top of the stairwell, the river provides a vibrant and welcoming space that honours the rich history of the local landscape and animals.

Paint the Rails is a unique partnership between the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights and Edmonton Transit Service that brings important community stories to public spaces.

Ceiling Art Installations

You need to look way up to see these two public art installations. They're suspended from the ceilings at the end of the escalators in each of the mid landings, one level up from the train platform. Other than being suspended from the ceiling, they're not at all alike.

"Tri: Making the Impossible Possible, 2003", by John Tam and Rob Hora is a colourful optical illusion of a giant steel ball suspended in the centre of a triangle. "From Here 2003", by Tim Antoniuk, Colin Birnie and Adrien Cho is a series of 12 aluminum sculptural forms suspended from the ceiling.

These works are from an invitational challenge to University of Alberta Art & Design students.

Thanks to The Works Society Art & Design in Public Places Program for working with us to acquire two new, very unique pieces of art for the LRT system.
