Transit Schedulers design the schedules for all Edmonton Transit bus routes and are also responsible for route testing. There are currently four full-time schedulers who report to the General Supervisor of Service Planning. The major job functions of Schedulers include designing efficient schedules for all ETS routes using computer software, and producing statistical reports used to evaluate the routes.
Scheduling includes production of operational schedules for regular ETS routes, school routes, and special events. Schedules affect platform hours, Operator sign-ups and customer satisfaction. There are many sources of input that impact scheduling including customer concerns, focus groups and committees, Bus Operations Supervisors, Inspectors, Operators, the Union, etc. Major road construction is another factor which must be taken into account.
Route testing is a major function of scheduling. It involves recording travel times on existing or proposed routes and identifying potential operating issues. Schedulers must take into account the timing of all routes, the connections, and Operator concerns. Modifications must be made to correct problems with routes.
Schedulers attend meetings with the various stakeholders to get input and hear concerns. Also, when mid sign-up changes to the schedules are required, Operator shifts must be taken into account and modified. The Schedulers must also advise Dispatch and ATU 569 of the changes, which must be done in accordance with the collective agreement.
Schedulers assist in preparing and checking route maps, brochures, internet information, and service change advertisements. They also provide information to Customer Services, Inspectors, Dispatchers, Operators and Fleet Services.
Schedulers work in an office environment at an ETS bus garage except when testing routes or attending meetings.
The work can be stressful as scheduling is tied into timelines for sign-ups and number of service changes planned. Scheduling must balance customer needs with budget dollars available for ETS service.
Hours of Work
Schedulers work regular weekday business hours (75 hours per pay period) and are eligible to participate in the “Earned Day Off” (EDO) program.

Schedulers are highly interdependent with other areas of ETS, especially Dispatch, Inspectors and Shift Design. They deal routinely with tight timelines. There are a limited number of buses and Schedulers must optimize the available service within the limitations. Schedulers have to be comfortable with technology.

Qualifications and Skills
- Completion of Grade 12.
- Minimum of seven years of varied experience as a Transit employee, including experience as a Transit Operator.
- Strong knowledge of Edmonton Transit and the City of Edmonton.
- Knowledge of ETS scheduling techniques.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to make mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately.
- Training and experience in Microsoft Office and Outlook.
- Knowledge of ETS standards, policies and procedures.
- Familiarity with the ATU 569 Agreement relating to shifts and sign-ups.
- Possession of a valid Class 2 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operators License.
Schedulers are members of the Amalgamated Transit Union 569. Classification, compensation and working conditions are governed by the Collective Agreement.
Preparing for This Job
Experience as an Operator is required. Experience in Dispatch, Shift Design or as an Inspector would be an asset. Computer skills are very important. You must be trained and experienced as Relief Scheduler before moving to a permanent position.
