Our 40+ year-old LRT network needs upgrades and maintenance to ensure it keeps serving Edmontonians for another 40 years and beyond.
TLC for LRT was created to help you effectively plan your commute. TLC for LRT projects include upgrades to LRT stations, infrastructure and tracks.
Most maintenance work is scheduled when there is generally lower ridership (evenings/weekends) to help minimize service disruptions to transit riders. However, there may be some weekday and/or long-term changes to help accomplish some projects.
We appreciate your patience and cooperation during this time. You can find up-to-date information about service impacts on the Alerts, Service Updates page, on ETS social media and on posters at LRT stations.
TLC for LRT Projects
Platform Repair and Tile Replacement
Over several years, crews will be intermittently completing platform renovations across our LRT system. This work will involve replacing platform warning tiles (the rumble strips at the edges of platforms), and demolishing and rebuilding sections of platforms that require renewal.
- 2021 - South Campus/Fort Edmonton Park Station
- 2020 - McKernan/Belgravia and Coliseum stations
Stadium LRT Station Redevelopment
We’re revitalizing one of Edmonton’s original LRT Stations! The Stadium LRT Station Redevelopment will address aging infrastructure that has been serving Edmonton for over 40 years. Construction began May 2020 and is anticipated to be complete in 2022.
Improvements include an additional platform, new heated shelters, new public washrooms and a new security office. This work will also involve renovating the entire station building, including the roof canopy, and removing the underground concourse.
Escalator Replacements and Elevator Upgrades
We are replacing escalators and upgrading elevators at a number of LRT stations along the Capital Line. These LRT system upgrades are needed to keep the escalators and elevators operating safely and efficiently for decades to come.
In 2022, we will be replacing three escalators at Central LRT Station.
We are also upgrading elevators at the following stations:
- Bay/Enterprise Square Station
- Central Station
- Corona Station
- University Station
Road/Pedestrian Crossing Improvements
We are upgrading LRT crossings along the Capital Line. This work includes:
- Replacing road gate signal systems
- Adding pedestrian gates
- Replacing and widening sidewalks to make them more accessible
Upgrades to crossings have been completed at: 82 Street, 92 Street, 95 Street, 112 Avenue, 115 Avenue, 66 Street and 125 Avenue, as well as the pedestrian crossing at Health Sciences/Jubilee Station. Future/ongoing locations include 129 Avenue.
Capital Line LRT Track Renewal
Through this work, crews will complete improvements to the tracks, tunnel structures, infrastructure, signaling and more. In May 2022, track work will be completed north of Churchill Station (where the Capital and Metro Lines meet) to make the rail more robust.
