Job Overview

The Supervisor of Shift Design leads a team of four, and reports to the Supervisor of Branch Operations Support Services.

The Supervisor of Shift Design oversees the creation of five Operator sign-ups each year and is accountable for creating useable shifts and the accuracy of the information on the sign-up sheets. This process produces sign-up books for Dispatch.

The Supervisor of Shift Design manages the impact of demand for platform hours with the operating budget. The sign-up should include as many 7.5 – 8.0 hour shifts as possible. The job includes maintaining data and statistical information and evaluating shift designs in terms of budget allocations.

The person in this position is responsible for Operator support information regarding the signups and their shifts, and providing detailed timing information for routes (running board). The Supervisor is also involved in providing direction to the team, setting expectations, and assignment of project work. He or she trains new Relief Shift Designers and mentors staff while ensuring they have the skills and expertise to do the work.

Working Environment

The Supervisor of Shift Design works out of an office in an ETS support facility close to the Shift Design team. There are limited distractions and the team can focus on the shift design work. The team meets regularly so the Supervisor can keep everyone informed about Bus Operations and get team member input.

The sign-up must be accurate and can not be late. This can create some stress if the Supervisor and team are not organized, so planning skills are essential. The shift design affects the work life of the Operators directly and is an important component of employee engagement.

Hours of Work

The Supervisor of Shift Design works standard business hours, Monday to Friday. Overtime could be required if a sign-up is not ready on time or for other related duties.

Unique Characteristics and Challenges of This Job

The timelines and planning requirements of this job are quite unique and the schedule is very tight. Shift design is part of a larger process. There is a four week window to get the shifts designed once the scheduling information is sent from Service Development. The process cannot be started until the schedules are completed.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Technical skills are essential. The Supervisor must have excellent computer and desktop skills.
  • Solid understanding of how ETS operates.
  • Practical experience as a bus Operator and experience in shift design or scheduling. Experience as an Inspector or Dispatcher would also be helpful. 
  • Experience in a leadership role is an asset.

The Supervisor of Shift Design is a management position. Classification, compensation, and working conditions are governed by the Total Rewards program for management.

Preparing for This Job

It is desirable for the Supervisor of Shift Design to have a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce or Business Administration. You should have a minimum of five years progressively responsible management experience and leadership experience that involves Transit Operations within a unionized environment, and a thorough understanding of the collective agreement in effect between the City of Edmonton and ATU 569 and the implications of working in a unionized environment. You should also have a thorough knowledge of the City of Edmonton budgetary procedures, policies and procedures.

Knowledge and experience in business planning, business process management, scheduling and shift design practices, and information system management are also essential.

You should have strong communication and interpersonal skills and be proficient in the use of computers including high level applications such as scheduling and shift design software (HASTUS), statistical software, Corel Draw and MS Office.
