Job Overview

LRT Training Instructors are primarily responsible for training and evaluating new LRT Motormen A2 License, LRT Inspectors A6 License, LRT Maintenance Staff A3 License, ETS Security B2, and outside contractors B2 (those working close to the LRT line). The Training Instructors report to the Supervisor of LRT Operations.

The major function of the Instructor is delivering training. New LRT Motormen receive five weeks of training. Training is delivered in the classroom, on the train and through coaching. Training Instructors also train the LRT Inspector, LRT Maintenance Staff, LRT Track Crew team, ETS Security, and outside contractors.

LRT Training Instructors are involved in delivering safety training and yearly refresher training for all LRT Rulebook qualified individuals.

Another important responsibility assigned to LRT Training Instructors is evaluating the skills of new Motormen and providing them with feedback using various testing and assessment tools. Informal feedback is provided daily. Instructors are also responsible for providing support and guidance to Motormen.

Instructors develop training materials for instruction. They evaluate any new equipment with the Supervisor of LRT Maintenance and determine the training needs. They then design the training, develop manuals, and design and administer the exams. Instructors also evaluate the effectiveness of existing training programs and make modifications to the content and delivery as required.

Depending on their areas of specialized knowledge, Instructors are assigned to various projects or special assignments. Some examples include LRT Rulebook changes, training auxiliary instructors and updating the operator manual.

There is also a great deal of administrative work (training records, manuals, training materials, etc.) involved in this position.

Working Environment

LRT Instructors work out of D.L. MacDonald Garage, with the use of several classrooms.

Hours of Work

LRT Training Instructors work a 7.5 hour shift, five days a week. However, shifts are variable and dependent on the needs of the LRT system. Shifts can be days or nights, Sunday through Saturday. Days off are subject to change. LRT Instructors may participate in the “Earned Day Off” (EDO) program and receive one day off per pay period by working 8.3 hours for the remaining nine days.

Unique Characteristics and Challenges of This Job

Resource management is a reality of the job. The Instructors do not always have access to Light Rail Vehicles and mainline. Planning ahead is essential, as is the ability to make adjustments quickly when equipment is not available for various reasons.

Time management is an important aspect of the job. This includes class preparation, instruction, preparing reports and special projects.

Consistency is very important in assessing the skills of new Motormen. Instructors must minimize subjectivity in the testing process. Instructors are responsible for ensuring that Motormen can safely handle the LRV and the ultimate decision on whether a new Motormen stays or goes rests with them.

Instructors must deal with different learning styles and cultures and find ways to connect with different personalities. If an issue arises, the Instructor must sort it out while being sensitive to the individuals involved.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Grade 12 diploma supplemented by post secondary courses from an education or related degree program, or an adult education diploma or certificate. 
  • Minimum of three years safe bus operating experience.
  • Minimum of one year as an LRT Operator.
  • Coaching experience, preferably as an LRT Auxiliary Instructor.
  • Experience teaching or instructing would be an asset.
  • Skills in adult education and training facilitation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Power Point and Outlook.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise.
  • Minimum Class 2 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operators License with an air brake endorsement and maintain an A1 License.
  • Upon appointment, the applicant must obtain and maintain required legislated licenses and be committed to maintain instructor proficiency.

Union Affiliation

LRT Instructors are members of the Amalgamated Transit Union 569. Classification, compensation and working conditions are governed by the Collective Agreement.

Preparing for This Job

If you are interested in becoming an LRT Instructor, experience as a LRT Operator would be a definite asset. You must be trained and experienced as Relief LRT Instructor before moving to a permanent position. Pursuing courses in adult education and an interest in teaching would be helpful.
