Edmonton Transit is currently seeking applications for the challenging position of Full time and Part time DATS Operators.

Functions

  • Assist passengers and deliver door to door transportation service to registered DATS users on variable routes using City owned Lift Vans
  • Handle diverse and challenging situations
  • Anticipate and adjust driving for changing weather and traffic conditions
  • Collect fares, submit payment information and complete reports as required
  • Adhere to scheduled pick-up and drop-off times
  • Obey and follow defensive driving guidelines, local traffic laws and Transit system regulations
  • Ensure the safety of all passengers
  • Communicate effectively in a variety of situations and
  • Provide excellent customer service

Qualifications

  • Completion of grade 11 is required. Formal training in driving or public relations will be considered an asset
  • Proven ability to deal directly and professionally with the public, preference will be given to individuals who have experience working with individuals with disabilities
  • Excellent map reading skills and knowledge of the geographical Edmonton area
  • Prior commercial passenger transportation experience is an asset
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job (operate lift van, secure all passengers and wheelchairs), provide passengers using mobility aids with assistance i.e. wheelchairs, walker, etc
  • Applicant must provide a current driver's abstract (obtained within 14 days of the pre-employment test date) showing no suspensions and no more than 3 demerits recorded over the previous 2 year period
  • Applicant must possess a valid class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's license (non-probationary and non-graduated) or operators licensing equivalent recognized by the Operator Licensing and Vehicle Control Regulation, Alta. Reg. 320/2002 and must have held a valid operator's license for 3 consecutive years
  • Must obtain a valid Class 4 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's License before training commences (at applicant's own expense)
  • Ability to pass pre-employment testing, a physical strength and cardio evaluation (F.A.R.E. test), and a Police Security clearance for working with vulnerable persons, prior to training
  • Selected applicants must pass a pre-employment medical exam, paid for by the City, prior to training
  • Successful completion of the ETS Training Program
  • Internal ETS applicants must have completed all mandatory in-house training

Competency Requirements

  • Ability to transport passengers safely, in a timely manner and communicate effectively with them in a variety of situations
  • Ability to ensure your own safety and that of your passengers on a preventative basis and during an emergency
  • Ability to safely operate every vehicle in our fleet and check it for operational readiness prior to entering service
  • Ability to balance your work responsibilities with your family priorities and your personal wellness
  • Contribute to Edmonton Transits' professional image by demonstrating responsible and ethical behaviour in all of your activities and
  • Apply clear thinking to select the best course of action to resolve problems or conflicts

Hours of Work

Variable hours of work, Sunday through Saturday, up to 40 hours per week

Salary Range

45B, Salary Grade: 002; Training Rate: $20.748 (Hourly); Post Training Rate: $23.261 - $26.270 (Hourly).  The rates quoted are in accordance with a collective agreement between the Union and the City of Edmonton. This Union contract is currently under negotiation
