Equipment Services provides open cut equipment operators, large and small construction equipment, tunnelling moles and operators plus other miscellaneous support services. It also supplies welding, electrical, carpentry and mechanical fabrication services for the installation of in-house drainage projects and, on a contract basis, to other City departments and external clients.
The tunnelling equipment owned and operated by Equipment Services includes seven tunnelling moles varying in size from 2.1 to 6.25 m diameter, cars and locomotives for transporting personnel and spoil in tunnels, hoists, cranes, as well as communications, gas detection and ventilation equipment to ensure that tunnel workers have a safe working environment.
The City has designed and fabricated numerous pieces of specialized equipment to make working in a tunnel easier and more cost effective. The most recent was a pipe carrier designed to install 2.1 m diameter concrete pipes weighing 21.5 metric tons each in a tunnel at the Rossdale Water Treatment Plant. The section also fabricates all of the steel ribs used for tunnel construction.
The expertise present in this section is so wide-ranging that almost anything required for new construction or refurbishment, from a simple metal trash rack to a fully portable pumping station, can be prefabricated under controlled conditions in the yard ready for field installation.
