At the heart of urban design is a passion to create vibrant, people focused cities through careful planning and shaping of neighbourhoods, streets, buildings, amenities and more. The aim of guiding principles is to harness that passion and provide the necessary tools to co-create the highly livable city envisioned by City Council.

Guiding principles provide the foundation for building a sustainable, livable, vibrant city by guiding development, standards, policies and plans.
Building guiding principles is the first step in implementing the Urban Design Framework and advancing urban design as a leading function within the City of Edmonton’s city-building ambitions. Principles provide guidance to public and private development, policies, plans, guidelines and standards in an effort to create a great public and private realm.
Process
The City is currently working with targeted internal and external stakeholder groups to develop principles that will be the foundation for a livable, sustainable and vibrant city. Draft guidelines are expected to be complete in summer 2018.
