Our Winter Story

Note: The numbering system connects the goals and activities to the Implementation Plan.

Goals of the Winter Story Pillar:

  • S1 - Celebrate the season and embrace daily living in a cold climate
  • S2 - Promote Edmonton's great northern story locally, nationally and internationally
  • S3 - Kickstart and lead implementation of Edmonton's WinterCity Strategy: Apply a 'winter lens' to our city

What we were up to this past winter:

Events and Festivals
Partnered with Edmonton Tourism to create an information hub for winter events and festivals. (Action S1.1)

Hosted a Premiere to Winter event where we launched the Winter Signature Drink Contest, premiered the For the Love of Winter video, and highlighted some festivals to look forward to. (Action S1.6)

Partnered with Edmonton Ski Club and Servus Credit Union to promote Servus Free Ski Fridays. (Action S1.6)

Hosted a Valentine's Disco Skate at City Hall, tying into the theme of falling in love with winter in Edmonton. (Action S1.6)

Produced a newsletter that shared information regarding events and activities related to the Strategy (in support of Goals S1 and S2).

Community League Workshop
Held a workshop at the EFCL Leagues Alive! Conference to explore ways to support community leagues' winter activities. (Action S1.6)

Hosted Edmonton's first ever Winter Signature Drink Contest. (Action S1.6)

Worked with the City Manager's Office to produce For the Love of Winter, a short film. (Action S1.6)

Partnered with Global Edmonton to produce and broadcast a public service announcement encouraging people to go outside and play in winter and highlighting the fun and beauty of the season. (in support of Goals S1 and S2)

Produced two short winter outerwear makeover videos that demonstrate how to dress warmly and fashionably (in support of Goal S1).

Winterscapes Program
Partnered with Front Yards in Bloom to pilot a new program called Front Yards in Bloom: Winterscapes. (Action S1.3)

Shared the Edmonton story at conferences including the Winter Cycling Congress and the Alberta Professional Planners Institute annual conference (in support of Goal S2).

Partnered with Edmonton Tourism to create a winter chapter of the Edmonton brand. (Action S2.2)

Leveraged marketing campaigns with Edmonton Tourism that focused on Edmontonian's humour, resilience, and pride in being a great northern city. (Action S2.3)

Social Media
Engaged thousands of people with our social media campaign, fostering dialogue and growing awareness through our Facebook and Twitter communities (in support of Goals S1 and S2).

People and a Plan
Identified a WinterCity Coordinator (Action S3.2), formed a WinterCity Advisory Council (Action S3.1), and developed an implementation plan. (Action S3.3)

What we’re working on now:

Refining our Communications Plan. (in support of the entire Strategy)

We are also continuing to work on most of the above actions.
