Responsible Hospitality supports “The Other 9-5”

Responsible Hospitality Edmonton (RHE) is responsible for policy development that supports safety, vibrancy and prosperity of the late night economy.  We accomplish this by bringing a night time lens to all aspects of City of Edmonton policies, services and programs.

RHE draws on the expertise and perspectives of the hospitality industry, the business and residential communities, safety providers and other City teams, including the Public Safety Compliance team (PSCT) and the Edmonton Police Service (EPS). Together, we work towards creating vibrant, safe and prosperous hospitality destinations. Hospitality destinations are gathering places for drinking, dancing, enjoying music, eating at restaurants, or just hanging out. RHE draws on the expertise and perspectives of hospitality industry, business community, residential community, safety providers, City departments, and patrons.

RHE examines 6 core elements in mind to plan for a safe and vibrant nightlife. They are: Vibrancy, Quality of Life, Transportation, Venue Safety, Community Policing, and Patron Responsibility.

The late night venues (those that have business licenses for “Alcohol Consumption on Premises, Minors Prohibited”) contributed $673 Million to Edmonton’s GDP and provided 11,700 full time equivalent jobs in 2014. Late night venues are located city-wide with 13 different clusters or “entertainment destinations” identified across the city.

Edmonton is recognized as a North American leader in planning for the late night economy, and received the Most Sociable City Award from the Responsible Hospitality Institute in 2009.

Successful Initiatives include:

  • Public Washrooms
  • Late night Transit
  • Best Bar None partner
  • Award Winning Patron Campaigns
  • Measuring Safety and Vibrancy  - Purple Flag Accreditation
  • 2nd Late Night Economic Impact Assessment
