Bark in the Park is back for its third year! Join us for tree planting, weed pulling, and education on native and invasive species in the area. You can be part of keeping our parks fun and safe for all.
Date: Wednesday May 15, 2019
Location: Terwillegar Off-Leash Area, 10 Rabbit Hill Road
In the Terwillegar off-leash area has developed a large patch of field scabious, a noxious weed that grows in mats and eliminates other types of vegetation. Any field scabious infestation that has been allowed to go to seed a few times will require many years of diligent weed control to eradicate.
Seeds from the plant may cling onto shoes, bike tires and dog fur, and put other green spaces at risk. It is crucial to control the spread so we can keep our parks clean and safe. This event will help you to learn how you can be part of the solution! To learn more about this species and others, see the fact sheets from the Alberta Invasive Species Council.
Here’s what to expect at the event:
Bring your pups! You and your best friend are welcome to join the Off-Leash Ambassadors and explore the education tables.
Education tables. Information on the growth of noxious weeds, such as field scabious, and how they impact native vegetation. Learn about some rare plant species in the park and pet safety around weeds.
Weed pull. Help us control other weeds in the area. If you fill a bag with pulled weeds, you get a native tree or shrub to take home and plant.
- Tree and shrub planting. Root for Trees will be working to naturalize areas of the park. Learn more about this great program and plant your own tree.
