Aerial view of EdmontonFederal funding has enabled Edmonton to move forward on major projects, many of which would have otherwise been deferred. Grant funding from the Federal government (as of 2013) includes:

Federal Gas Tax (FGTF)
is a grant program that shares gasoline tax profits through the provinces to Canadian municipalities. The program provides predictable, long-term funding for Canadian municipalities to help build and revitalize public infrastructure that achieves positive environmental results. This fund has contributed toward the project costs of the southern extension of the City's light rail transit (South LRT to Century Park project).

Building Canada Fund
is a fund that supports projects designed to deliver results in three identified areas of national importance, a stronger economy, a cleaner environment and strong and prosperous communities. This fund has contributed toward the project costs of the north extension of Edmonton's light rail transit system (North LRT to NAIT project).

These and other infrastructure funding sources are explained in detail in the 10-year Capital Investment Agenda (2012 -21).
