Workshop Presentations and Materials
On December 4 and 5, 2013 The City of Edmonton (Drainage Services and the Office of Biodiversity), the Urban Development Institute (Edmonton Chapter) and Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development partnered to deliver the Integrating Natural Wetlands and Improving Design of Naturalized Storm Water Management Facilities in the City of Edmonton Workshop.
The objectives of the workshop were to provide information on the design and integration of natural wetlands and naturalized storm water facilities into the urban landscape, as well as to facilitate discussion of solutions to current challenges.
The two-day event featured plenary speakers Lisette Ross (Native Plant Solutions – Ducks Unlimited Canada) and David Martz (Ducks Unlimited Canada).
On day one, Lisette and David provided an introduction to the ecology and hydrology of prairie wetlands, and representatives from the City of Edmonton, the Province of Alberta and the Urban Development Institute provided insight into the policy and regulatory frameworks that guide storm water management and wetland retention in the City of Edmonton.
On day two, the speakers discussed the benefits and key design elements of naturalized storm water management facilities, with an emphasis on real-world examples and local case studies. Throughout the workshop, participants engaged in group discussions of key opportunities and challenges related to the design of naturalized storm water management facilities and integration of natural wetlands into urban developments.
