The Heritage Outreach Committee was established in 2005, when the Heritage Sites Committee and the Communications Committee were dissolved.
The Committee’s primary focus is to assist the Edmonton Historical Board in promoting public awareness of heritage concerns through education and/or promotion.
The Committee also:
- provides advice and recommends positions on heritage advocacy
- provides external communication and activities/projects through various media to increase the public’s awareness of Edmonton’s heritage
- liaises and collaborates with other heritage bodies where the Edmonton Historical Board or the Committee deems it appropriate
In November 2013, the EHB launched a website that documents the many architectural styles found in Edmonton. The website profiles over 22 styles as found in Edmonton, as well as over 70 houses, commercial and public structures which represent these local building traditions. The aim is to further develop Edmonton's sense of place, encourage an historical consciousness and to help instill pride in our city's unique built heritage.
The Committee also collaborated with the City of Edmonton Archives and the Edmonton Heritage Council on the Edmonton Maps Heritage website. These interactive maps highlight Edmonton’s heritage buildings and as well as heritage organizations, museums, and archives.
